From Remote Internship to job opportunity
Revenue management plays an important role in the #hospitality industry. Here is an interview with our student Davide after his internship at ELASTIC Hotel, a prominent revenue management start-up company, that took place in a “smart working”, remote environment (although with a few team building presencial meeting, of course!)
What pushed you, enrolled in an on campus bachelor’s in hospitality, to choose a remote internship?
The idea of a student in Hospitality currently working for a business services start-up as I do may turn someone’s nose up: the concept of Hospitality has an easy recall on classic operative jobs, which are even misjudged by most because of its verbose biases. As in every other case, it takes so little information to revise one’s opinion and forget what is wrongfully thought: so it comes easy to understand that, as students and experts in the field of Hospitality, we cannot be stopped by those rethorical prejudices and have the responsability to deepen our matter, for our future and for the future of Tourism and Hospitality. That led me into my decision, the possibility to discover a whole new concept of Hospitality, in which Revenue Management and back office tasks are still guaranteeing the main goal of our industry: to host and accommodate our guests.
How was your experience, your typical working day, the relationship with clients and colleagues, in a remote/hybrid environment?
Working for ElasticHotel, as for almost every case of remote workers, comes with the problem of meeting people and clients, encounter your colleagues and still create a human-connected environment. In reality, my remote working relies on independence and autonomy, in terms of every-day operative tasks. One can easily understand why this is such a non-stressful environment, and it is so much easier to connect with your co-workers, colleagues etc. Not to mention the “ElasticLive”, those unmissable live reunions that give us the opportunity to relieve stress and share casual meetings with our team!
As a last year bachelor’s student and considering your internship experience, what is the potential you see in revenue management for the hospitality industry?
The Hospitality industry is incredibly full of layers: accommodation, F&B, logistic and so much more. In the complexity of daily tasks, every hotel has somehow to ensure to maximise profit and deploy resources. Revenue Management is the solution: the hotel management department can strictly focus on its core businesses and tasks inside the Hotel, outsourcing its yield management to a trusted firm of RM. Its importance comes in such an easy explanation, but still you have to face some hard ways, such as the lack of Digital development and culture in almost the whole national Hospitality industry, to name one. However, the Hospitality Industry is proven to be strongly holding the concept of Revenue Management as the future of this matter. Let’s imagine that the Global revenue management market size is projected to reach USD 300.6 Billion by 2023, and the revenue cycle management demand will witness a robust CAGR of 11.4% from 2023 to 2032. In other words, with RMSs we are not just developing a certain technical field such as Hospitality Revenue Management for Tourism, but we are leading our national world of work into matching a global worldwide trend.
